The UAE has designated September 9 as an annual Emergency Number Day, with authorities using the occasion to remind residents of one simple but important rule: 999 is for genuine emergencies.

The nationwide initiative is being led by the Ministry of Interior in cooperation with Dubai Police and police forces across the Emirates. Running under the slogan “Every Second Makes a Difference,” it also reminds the public to use 901 for general enquiries and non-urgent police services.

But the campaign is not only about knowing which number to call. Authorities also want people to understand what to do once they are on the line, from giving an accurate location to clearly explaining what has happened.

Why Calling the Right Number Matters

In an emergency, time is critical. Police operations rooms need to quickly understand what has happened, where the incident is taking place and what kind of help is required.

Calls about non-urgent matters can add pressure to emergency lines. Using 901 for general police enquiries helps keep 999 available for situations where someone needs immediate assistance.

The UAE is also home to people from a wide range of nationalities and backgrounds, so making that message accessible is an important part of the campaign.

Multilingual awareness material will be used to help communities across the country understand how and when different police communication channels should be used.

When Should You Call 999 or 901?

For residents, the main message is easy to remember.

Call 999 when you need urgent police assistance.

If the matter is not an emergency and you simply need information or another non urgent police service, call 901 instead.

Knowing the difference beforehand can be particularly useful in a stressful situation, when there may be little time to work out who to contact.

There are also separate numbers for other emergency services in the UAE. 998 is used for ambulance services, while 997 connects callers with Civil Defence and fire emergency services.

Keeping the correct numbers in mind means less time searching for information when urgent help is needed.

What Should You Say When Calling 999?

Knowing the number is only part of making an effective emergency call.

Authorities are asking callers to give their location as accurately as possible and then clearly explain what has happened.

It is also important to listen to the operator and answer their questions. Even when the situation feels urgent, those questions serve a purpose. They help establish what is happening and what kind of response may be required.

Brigadier Turki Abdulrahman bin Faris, Director of the General Department of Operations at Dubai Police, highlighted the importance of accurate information in helping emergency services respond quickly.

Something as simple as giving a precise location can make a real difference by helping teams understand exactly where assistance is needed.

Making Emergency Awareness Part of Everyday Life

Emergency Number Day is intended to do more than remind people of three digits once a year.

Brigadier Abdulaziz Al Ahmad, Director-General of Central Operations at the Ministry of Interior, highlighted the importance of improving awareness around the correct use of police communication channels.

The broader aim is to make sure people know what counts as an emergency and where to turn when a situation is not urgent.

That knowledge is most useful when people learn it before they need it.

If someone already knows which number to call, they can concentrate on describing the situation and getting the right information to the operator instead of searching for contact details during a stressful moment.

The People Behind an Emergency Call

When someone dials 999, the person answering the phone is only one part of a much larger response.

Call handlers and operations-room staff receive the initial information and help establish what kind of assistance is required. Field teams and other personnel can then respond according to the circumstances.

For the caller, the conversation may last only a few minutes. Behind the scenes, however, the details they provide can help different teams coordinate their response.

Emergency Number Day will also recognise the people involved in that process and the work they do to protect lives and property across the UAE.

One Message Worth Remembering

The new annual awareness day leaves UAE residents with a straightforward rule.

Use 999 for genuine emergencies and 901 for general enquiries and non emergency police services.

If 999 is needed, callers should give their location clearly, briefly explain what has happened and follow the operator’s instructions.

These may seem like small steps, but they can help emergency services work more efficiently when time matters.

With September 9 now set to bring that reminder every year, the message behind the initiative is simple: use the right number, give the right information and help keep emergency lines available for those who urgently need them.

Because in an emergency, every second makes a difference.
