Premier League clubs have broken the transfer spending record for a second summer in a row, investing around £3.46 billion ($4.67 billion) as England’s top flight continues to flex its financial muscle.
The summer window was busy right until the end, with clubs spending heavily as they strengthened their squads for the new season. Around £475 million was spent on deadline day alone, comfortably above the £391 million recorded a year earlier.
The numbers show just how quickly the Premier League transfer market has grown. Last summer was the first time total spending crossed the £3 billion mark. Five years ago, clubs spent around £1.13 billion during the equivalent window.
This summer’s total is more than three times that figure.
Manchester City lead the spending
Manchester City were the biggest spenders of the window, investing around £458 million as manager Enzo Maresca reshaped his squad.
Their biggest move came on deadline day, when Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez arrived from Chelsea for a reported £125 million, equalling the British transfer record.
City also spent £116 million to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, while Senegal winger Iliman Ndiaye joined from Everton for a reported £65 million.
Chelsea were not far behind in terms of activity. The London club spent around £349 million as manager Xabi Alonso strengthened his options.
One of their standout deals was the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million, placing him among the most expensive players of an already remarkable transfer window.
Big money deals dominate the summer
Liverpool also made a major move, bringing France forward Bradley Barcola to Anfield from Paris Saint-Germain.
The initial fee was reported to be around £107 million and could eventually rise to £123 million.
Tottenham Hotspur broke their own transfer record to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a deal that could reach £100 million. Spurs spent around £303 million in total as they made significant changes to their squad.
Those deals underline just how far transfer fees at the top end of the Premier League have climbed. Fernandez, Anderson, Rogers and Barcola now sit among the 11 most expensive signings in the competition’s history.
There was plenty of business further down the market as well. Aston Villa signed Senegal winger Ibrahim Mbaye from PSG for around £47 million, while Newcastle United paid approximately £51.4 million for Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille.
More money is staying inside the Premier League
Another striking feature of this summer’s window was how much business took place between Premier League clubs.
Around 38 per cent of deals involved players moving from one English top-flight club to another, compared with roughly 30 per cent the previous summer.
Several of the window’s biggest transfers followed that pattern. Fernandez moved from Chelsea to Manchester City, Rogers left Aston Villa for Chelsea and Anderson switched Nottingham Forest for City.
Even the newly promoted sides were prepared to spend heavily.
Ipswich Town, Coventry City and Hull City reportedly invested more than £400 million between them as they prepared for life in the Premier League.
For clubs arriving from the Championship, that level of investment shows just how expensive competing in England’s top division has become.
Premier League pulls further ahead of Europe
The record-breaking window also highlights the financial gap between the Premier League and Europe’s other major domestic leagues.
English clubs spent around £3.46 billion over the summer. By comparison, La Liga clubs spent roughly £640 million to £650 million, while Serie A spending was around £1 billion. Bundesliga clubs remained below £700 million.
Put simply, Premier League clubs spent more than five times as much as teams in Spain’s top division.
That spending power is backed by the league’s huge broadcasting agreements, global audience and commercial appeal. Premier League clubs generated a combined £6.8 billion in revenue during the 2024-25 season, according to Deloitte, up 8 per cent from the previous year.
But having more money available does not mean clubs can spend without limits. Rising wages and financial regulations continue to put pressure on teams to balance ambition with responsible financial management.
Even so, there is little evidence that the Premier League’s appetite for big transfers is fading.
For the second year running, English clubs have pushed summer spending to a new high. With £100 million transfers becoming increasingly familiar and even promoted clubs investing heavily, the Premier League continues to operate on a financial scale few domestic competitions can match.
