A free evening in the UAE does not always mean heading straight home. For many young residents, it can be the perfect excuse to try something new, meet friends or simply find a reason to get out.

Small Plans, Unexpected AdventuresSocial Media Keeps the Ideas ComingWhy the UAE Suits the TrendIt Is About People as Much as PlacesWhen Side Quests Add Up

A quick message in a group chat can turn into coffee, dinner, a late-night drive or a visit to a place nobody had planned to see. The question may be as simple as “What are we doing tonight?” but the answer can lead to an entire evening of unplanned activities.

This habit is increasingly being described as the “side quest” lifestyle, a term borrowed from gaming. In games, side quests are smaller missions that happen alongside the main story. In everyday life, the idea has taken on a similar meaning: spontaneous plans that are not essential, but make the day more interesting.

Small Plans, Unexpected Adventures

A side quest does not have to involve an expensive experience or a carefully organised itinerary.

It could be trying a recently opened café, checking out an exhibition, visiting a pop-up event, taking a drive or exploring a neighbourhood that friends have never visited before.

Sometimes, there is barely a plan at all.

A friend may need to pick something up, someone else may suggest getting coffee, and before long, the simple errand has become a social evening.

That spontaneity is part of the attraction. The activity itself may be ordinary, but doing it with friends can make it feel different from the usual routine.

For young professionals and students, these small breaks can also offer a chance to step away from work, studies and daily responsibilities without having to plan an entire weekend.

Social Media Keeps the Ideas Coming

Finding something to do has also become easier because of social media.

TikTok and Instagram regularly introduce users to new restaurants, cafés, events, attractions and activities. A short video can be enough to make a place look worth visiting, while a recommendation shared in a group chat can quickly become the next plan.

The search can sometimes become part of the fun itself.

One person suggests a restaurant, another recommends a café nearby, and someone else finds an event happening that evening. The original plan may change completely by the time everyone meets.

And not every “side quest” has to cost much. A drive, a walk, coffee with friends or even a late-night supermarket run can become an outing when the right company is involved.

Why the UAE Suits the Trend

The UAE’s cities offer plenty of options for people who want to change their surroundings at short notice.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi have a broad mix of restaurants, cafés, malls, beaches, cultural attractions, entertainment venues and seasonal events. New businesses, pop-ups and experiences continually add to the choices available to residents.

That variety makes spontaneous plans relatively easy.

When one idea falls through, there is often another option within a short drive. A person who has lived in the same city for years can still find new places to visit or familiar areas to experience differently.

For young residents, that accessibility can make going out feel less like a major event and more like a normal part of the week.

It Is About People as Much as Places

The side quest trend may look like a constant search for new destinations, but its appeal is not necessarily about checking places off a list.

Often, it is simply about spending time together.

A long drive can turn into an hour of conversation. A coffee can become dinner. A quick visit to one location can lead to another stop before the night is over.

For people with busy schedules, these unplanned moments can be an easy way to reconnect with friends without arranging something weeks in advance.

When Side Quests Add Up

There is, however, a downside to always looking for the next activity.

Frequent outings can become expensive, particularly when a quick coffee turns into dinner, dessert or another purchase. There can also be pressure to keep making plans.

Social media can add to that feeling. Seeing other people constantly travelling, dining out or discovering new places may create the impression that every free evening should be exciting.

But staying home is not necessarily a failure to make the most of the day.

The real appeal of a side quest may be that it is optional. Some days call for an outing; others are better spent doing nothing at all.

For UAE youth, the trend reflects a simple desire to break routine and make ordinary days feel a little less predictable. Sometimes, all it takes is a message, a few friends and a decision to see where the evening goes.
