Taco Bell is officially coming back to the UAE, 14 years after the American fast-food chain disappeared from the local dining scene.

For fans who remember its earlier UAE run, the announcement brings a dose of nostalgia. For a younger generation familiar with Taco Bell through travel, social media and pop culture, it means another major international fast-food name is preparing to enter an increasingly competitive market.

Americana Restaurants has signed an exclusive development agreement with Taco Bell UK and Europe Ltd to launch and develop the brand in the UAE. The comeback is also expected to serve as the starting point for a wider, phased expansion across the GCC.

There is one detail fans will have to wait for: neither the opening date nor the locations of the first restaurants have been officially announced.

Taco Bell previously operated in the UAE before leaving the market in 2012. A lot has changed since then, particularly when it comes to Mexican food.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi now have everything from fast-casual burrito counters to independent taquerias and more traditional Mexican restaurants. So while the wait for Taco Bell continues, there is no shortage of tacos, burritos and quesadillas to explore.

Maiz Tacos

What started as a Dubai food truck has developed into one of the city’s familiar homegrown names for casual Mexican-inspired food.

Maiz Tacos puts tacos at the centre of the experience, alongside dishes such as quesadillas and nachos. Its relaxed format makes it an easy choice for diners looking for something casual rather than a formal Mexican meal.

The brand has locations in JLT and Dubai Hills.

El Primo Taqueria

For diners particularly interested in tacos, El Primo Taqueria draws inspiration from Mexico City’s street-food culture.

Its menu offers corn and flour tortillas with a variety of fillings. Options include pastor chicken with pineapple as well as different beef preparations, while birria is another attraction for those looking for richer flavours.

It offers a different experience from Mexican-inspired fast food and is worth considering for diners who want tacos to be the focus of the meal.

Tortilla

UK born Tortilla follows a similarly quick and customisable approach.

Customers can choose between burritos, tacos and bowls before adding their preferred fillings and toppings. That makes it one of the more obvious options for anyone craving the convenience associated with Mexican-inspired fast food while waiting for Taco Bell to arrive.

The chain has expanded across the UAE, with several locations in Dubai as well as a presence in Abu Dhabi.

La Patrona

For diners interested in moving closer to traditional Mexican flavours, La Patrona takes a different approach.

The brand emphasises handmade tortillas and Mexican chillies, with tacos and quesabirria among its offerings.

Its Dubai JLT operation is currently listed as delivery-only, while the brand also has a presence in Abu Dhabi, so diners should check the latest location details before visiting.

Loca

At the more upscale end of the spectrum is Loca, a long-established name in the UAE’s Mexican dining scene.

Rather than positioning itself as a direct alternative to Taco Bell, Loca gives diners an opportunity to explore Mexican cuisine in a more substantial restaurant setting.

Its offering stretches beyond tacos and burritos into dishes including fajitas and other Mexican specialities, making it a choice for diners looking for a longer sit-down experience.

A very different UAE awaits Taco Bell

Taco Bell will be returning to a market that looks considerably different from the one it left in 2012.

The chain now operates more than 9,000 restaurants worldwide, including more than 1,200 outside the United States, and its UAE comeback forms part of a broader international growth strategy.

The UAE will be the starting point for Americana Restaurants’ planned GCC rollout of the brand, although the companies have yet to reveal which Gulf markets will follow or when.

Competition will also be considerably stronger this time around. UAE residents now have access to independent taquerias, homegrown Mexican concepts, international chains and upscale restaurants, giving diners a much broader understanding of Mexican and Mexican-inspired food.

That could make Taco Bell’s second attempt in the country particularly interesting.

For existing fans, the attraction will likely be familiar Taco Bell favourites and the brand’s distinctive fast-food experience. For newcomers, it will be entering a market where tacos, burritos, quesadillas and birria are already widely available.

Exactly where the first Taco Bell will open remains unknown, although comments surrounding the announcement point towards Dubai playing a central role in the rollout.

Until the official locations and opening dates are revealed, UAE diners still have plenty of places to satisfy a taco or burrito craving.
