A Rolls-Royce commission in Dubai can begin with something far removed from cars a family memory, a photograph, a piece of fabric or a colour associated with a particular place.

Those references can eventually find their way into paintwork, embroidery, wood finishes and other details of a vehicle created specifically for one customer.

That is the idea behind Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ Private Office in Dubai, where clients work directly with specialists on some of the marque’s most personalised commissions.

Rather than operating as a conventional showroom, the space is built around the design process. Customers can bring ideas and personal references to meetings, examine materials and colours, and work through how those details might be incorporated into a car before it is produced at Rolls-Royce’s home in Goodwood, England.

Personal details shape the design

The starting point is often a conversation.

A customer may arrive with a clear idea of what they want, while another might bring photographs, artwork, fabric or an object carrying personal significance. Designers then consider which elements can realistically be translated into the vehicle.

A particular shade may become the basis for an exterior colour. Patterns can influence embroidery or decorative details. Materials, stitching and veneers can also be selected or developed to complement the wider concept.

That level of individualisation has become an important part of the ultra-luxury automotive business, particularly in markets where customers may already own several high-end or limited-production vehicles.

Why Rolls-Royce chose Dubai

Rolls-Royce opened its Private Office in Dubai in 2022, making the emirate home to the company’s first permanent Private Office outside the UK.

The decision reflected the Middle East’s importance to its Bespoke business and the level of personalisation requested by customers in the region.

The Dubai operation gives clients closer access to the creative side of the commissioning process without requiring every discussion to take place in Britain. The ideas developed in Dubai can then be carried through with the teams at Goodwood responsible for producing the finished vehicle.

Rolls-Royce has subsequently expanded the Private Office concept into other international markets as demand for more complex bespoke commissions has increased.

Dubai, however, remains an important location for the programme, particularly as buyers in the region continue to seek cars developed around individual tastes rather than standard specifications.

A piece of lace becomes part of a Phantom

One example of how far the process can go is the Phantom Dentelle, a one-off commission developed through Private Office Dubai for a Middle Eastern customer.

The car was commissioned as a gift for the client’s father, with its design taking inspiration from a piece of handmade couture lace.

Rather than reproducing the lace directly, the design team interpreted its floral forms across different parts of the Phantom.

One of its most intricate features appeared in the interior Gallery, where embroidery involving more than 160,000 stitches was used to create the design. Lace-inspired detailing continued elsewhere in the cabin, while the exterior included a floral coachline motif.

The project showed how an object with personal significance could provide the starting point for details across an entire vehicle.

Another commission linked to the Dubai Private Office looked instead to the Middle Eastern landscape. Colours associated with the desert and sunrise were used as inspiration for the exterior of a Ghost Extended.

The two cars were very different, but the process behind them followed a similar principle: begin with something meaningful to the customer and determine how it can work within the vehicle.

More than paint and leather

Bespoke automotive design has expanded considerably beyond choosing unusual colour combinations.

Depending on the commission, Rolls-Royce craftspeople can work with embroidery, marquetry, specially developed surface treatments and other techniques alongside more familiar materials such as leather and wood.

Physical samples remain important during the process. A colour viewed on a screen may appear different under natural light, while the texture of a material can be difficult to judge digitally.

When exclusivity becomes personal

For the luxury car industry, such commissions point to a changing definition of exclusivity.

Limited production numbers and high prices still matter, but wealthy customers increasingly have access to both. Personalisation offers another distinction: details that are difficult to reproduce because they originate with the owner rather than the manufacturer.

In some cases, those details may be immediately noticeable. In others, they could be understood only by the customer and the people closest to them.

That is what makes the Dubai Private Office unusual. The most important item brought into the room may not be a list of vehicle specifications at all.

It could simply be the photograph, memory, colour or object from which the finished car begins.
