Private schools across the UAE are offering scholarships worth up to 50% of tuition fees, with students able to qualify through academic achievement, sport, performing arts, leadership and other areas of excellence.
While strong academic results remain important for some awards, top grades are not always essential. Several schools are taking a broader approach, considering a student’s talent, character, potential and contribution to school life.
The range of programmes gives families another avenue to explore as they manage the cost of private education, although eligibility, award values and application requirements vary considerably between schools.
Scholarships Look Further Than Academic Results
At Arcadia British School, the Principal’s Awards for Excellence recognise achievement across academics, sport and performing arts.
The awards are primarily offered to students entering Years 7, 10 and 12, allowing candidates to apply at key stages of their education.
Giles Pruett, executive principal of Arcadia British School and a member of the Board of Governors at Arcadia Education, said the selection process considers both achievement and future potential.
Qualities including kindness, integrity, determination, aspiration and leadership can also form part of the assessment.
The approach means students do not necessarily need the highest grades to be considered, particularly when applying for scholarships based on sporting or creative achievement.
Awards Can Reach 50% of Fees
The financial value of scholarships differs depending on the school, year group and category.
At Arcadia, students entering Years 7 and 10 can receive bursaries covering up to 25% of fees, while a limited number of exceptional students entering Year 12 may receive awards worth up to 50%.
Requirements also differ by category. Sporting candidates are expected to demonstrate a strong competitive record, while performing arts applicants may be assessed in areas including music, drama and dance.
Regent International School also offers merit-based scholarships across selected year groups, covering academics, sport, music, performing arts and leadership.
The opportunities are available to both existing Regent students and prospective pupils.
Families considering an application should check exactly what is included. A scholarship that reduces tuition fees may not cover additional costs such as school transport, uniforms, examinations or extracurricular activities.
GEMS Offers Multiple Scholarship Programmes
GEMS Education provides several scholarship routes across its network, including school-specific awards, Centre of Excellence Scholarships and the GEMS Genius Scholarship.
The Genius Scholarship is available to eligible students of all nationalities, including pupils already enrolled at GEMS schools and those applying from elsewhere.
Applications for the 2027 academic year are due to open in October 2026 for students entering Year 10/Grade 9 and Year 12/Grade 11.
Successful candidates receive the scholarship for two years.
Hundreds of students receive awards through different GEMS scholarship programmes each academic year.
New Schools Expand Scholarship Options
Newer schools are also introducing awards as they establish their student communities.
Rugby School Dubai is offering scholarships that typically cover up to 10% of annual tuition fees for eligible students entering Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 in August 2027.
Successful students can also receive mentoring and access to enrichment and leadership opportunities. Standard awards are reviewed every two years.
The school additionally offers the Ruwad al Emarat Scholarship for Emirati students, covering 50% of fees from Years 4 to 13.
Queen Elizabeth’s School in Dubai Sports City is also developing its scholarship programme. Its approach is expected to consider academic performance alongside character, individual strengths and the contribution applicants could make to the wider school community.
What Parents Should Check
With scholarship programmes differing significantly across the UAE, families should review individual eligibility requirements before applying.
Some awards are limited to particular year groups, while others may have nationality requirements or expect evidence of achievement in a specific field.
Application deadlines, assessment processes and the length of an award can also vary. Parents should confirm whether a scholarship applies only to tuition or includes any additional school costs.
Students with strengths outside the classroom should not automatically rule themselves out. Sporting achievement, music, drama and leadership can all provide routes to financial awards at some schools.
For families, the growing range of programmes means scholarship opportunities are becoming more varied.
Academic excellence continues to play an important role, but it is no longer the only measure being considered. Across several UAE schools, talent, character, leadership and potential are also helping students compete for substantial reductions in tuition fees.
