UAE targets sellers of unapproved weight loss products

Dubai’s health regulator has pulled back the curtain on a growing problem hiding in plain sight on social media: unapproved weight-loss injections being marketed to residents without any medical oversight.

71 Violations Reported Online Sales Under Watch Retatrutide Warning IssuedWeight Loss Drug Demand RisesAuthorities Issue Public Warning

The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) disclosed to Al Etihad that it has acted against 71 parties involved in selling or promoting unauthorized peptide-based weight-loss products, in one of the clearest signals yet that regulators are treating online drug promotion as a serious enforcement priority.

71 Violations Reported

Of the total, 14 cases involved registered pharmaceutical facilities that fell short of regulatory standards. A separate set of 14 cases involved social media influencers, who have been passed on to the National Media Authority for allegedly breaking rules that govern how pharmaceutical products can be advertised and sold online. The rest of the violations trace back to unlicensed sellers operating outside any formal pharmaceutical network altogether.

One detail stood out in the EDE’s disclosure: none of the unauthorized peptide products it found had made their way into licensed pharmaceutical warehouses under its watch. That’s a meaningful distinction — it suggests the country’s formal pharmacy supply chain has held firm even as illegal products circulate freely elsewhere. Even so, the regulator is keeping up inspection rounds at compounding pharmacies, the specialized facilities that mix custom medications, to make sure nothing slips through.

Online Sales Under Watch

If there’s one takeaway from the EDE’s comments, it’s this: the fight against illegal weight-loss drugs isn’t happening in pharmacies anymore — it’s happening in Instagram captions and WhatsApp groups. Officials describe a pattern where sellers dress up unproven products with buzzwords like “all-natural,” “completely safe,” or “miracle results,” banking on the fact that shoppers rarely stop to question claims that sound too good to be true.

Fares Al Mazmi, who leads the EDE’s Inspection and Control Department, put it plainly to Al Etihad: violations tied to licensed pharmacies are the exception, not the rule — the real exposure comes from the open web. He described a continuous effort to monitor suspicious websites and social accounts, coordinate with other authorities to take down offending pages, escalate serious cases for legal action, and run public education campaigns steering people back toward licensed pharmacies.

Retatrutide Warning Issued

One product got called out by name: Retatrutide, an injectable drug that’s picked up a considerable social media following despite never having cleared regulatory approval. The EDE was unambiguous — Retatrutide is still confined to clinical trials and isn’t cleared for sale or use in the UAE.

There’s a broader warning buried in that specific example, too. The EDE cautioned that simply branding something a “peptide” doesn’t make it medically sanctioned. A lot of what’s circulating online falls into a grey zone of research-grade compounds — substances that were never meant for public use and come without reliable data on correct dosing, quality control, or how they might interact dangerously with other medications someone is already taking.

Weight Loss Drug Demand Rises

None of this is happening in isolation. Weight-loss medicine has become one of the most talked-about categories of healthcare in the UAE over the past year. The EDE recently cleared an oral version of Wegovy for adults dealing with obesity or weight-related health complications, a move that put the UAE among the very first countries — second in the world — to approve that pill format.

That approval sits alongside a steady climb in demand for injectable options like Wegovy, Ozempic, and Mounjaro, which doctors keep insisting should only be used with proper medical guidance. Physicians have repeatedly flagged the risks of buying these drugs through informal online channels, where there’s simply no way to confirm what’s actually in the vial, whether it’s been stored correctly, or if it’s genuine at all.

It also echoes an earlier scare in Abu Dhabi, where health authorities identified more than 40 weight-loss, bodybuilding, and cosmetic products as unsafe or adulterated. Lab testing on those products turned up an unsettling mix of contaminants — bacteria, mould, yeast, heavy metals, and pharmaceutical ingredients that were never disclosed on the label.

Authorities Issue Public Warning

Strip away the numbers and statements, and the EDE’s message to residents is fairly simple: don’t buy weight-loss medication based on a social media post. Talk to a licensed doctor, get it from an approved pharmacy, and treat “natural” or “miracle” marketing claims as a red flag rather than a reassurance. As the regulator put it, public awareness is still the strongest defence against products that were never meant to be sold in the first place.
