From gentle mountain walks to wildlife filled mangrove boardwalks, these seven UAE destinations offer families an easier way to enjoy the outdoors this winter.

As temperatures fall across the UAE, families are finding more opportunities to exchange indoor entertainment for outdoor adventures. However, hiking with young children requires a different approach. Long climbs, steep paths and demanding routes can quickly turn an enjoyable family outing into an exhausting experience.

Fortunately, the UAE has several outdoor destinations where families can enjoy nature without committing to challenging mountain treks. From short walking routes in Ras Al Khaimah to coastal boardwalks in Abu Dhabi, these seven locations offer different ways to experience the country’s landscapes during the winter hiking season, which generally runs from October to April.

Jebel Jais, Ras Al Khaimah

The UAE’s highest mountain offers more than challenging climbs. Its beginner-friendly routes make it possible for families to enjoy mountain scenery at a manageable pace.

The Farfar trail is the shortest option at 700 metres and takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Al Teen covers 1.2km along relatively flat terrain, while Sidir extends to 1.6km with gentle inclines. Families looking for a longer walk can consider the 2.2km Al Asbaq route.

There is also a children’s park near the mountain’s base, giving younger visitors another activity to enjoy after their walk.

Shawka Dam and Pools, Ras Al Khaimah

Shawka offers families a combination of walking routes, mountain scenery and natural pools. Its trail network extends up to 8km, although visitors can choose shorter sections rather than completing the entire route.

The initial staircase requires some effort, but the surrounding landscape provides plenty of opportunities to pause and enjoy the scenery. The natural pools also make interesting stopping points during the outing.

Parents should keep children close on narrower paths, as mountain bikers also use parts of the network.

Hatta Mountain Trails, Dubai

Hatta is a popular choice for families who want to spend a full day surrounded by mountain scenery. Its 32.6km network of signposted trails is divided into different difficulty levels, allowing beginners to select more manageable routes.

The colour coded system helps visitors identify suitable paths before setting off. Families can also turn back when younger walkers become tired rather than feeling obliged to complete a longer route.

Located approximately 90 minutes from Dubai, Hatta Wadi Hub provides facilities including toilets and showers. The hiking trails are free to access.

Jubail Mangrove Park, Abu Dhabi

For children who prefer wildlife and water to rocky mountain paths, Jubail Mangrove Park offers a different outdoor experience.

Its wooden boardwalks feature three walking options of 1km, 1.6km and 2km. Educational stops along the routes introduce visitors to the coastal ecosystem, with viewing platforms offering opportunities to observe marine life.

Children may spot herons, flamingos, fish and crabs among the mangroves. The park also features a dedicated play area.

Families can consider a ranger led boardwalk experience, priced at Dh50 per person for visitors aged seven and above. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Al Rabi Tower, Khor Fakkan

Families with older children who are comfortable walking longer distances can consider the Al Rabi Tower trail in Khor Fakkan.

The approximately 6km round trip leads to a historic watchtower built in 1915 as part of the town’s coastal defences. The route rewards visitors with views overlooking Khor Fakkan and the Gulf of Oman.

However, it is more demanding than the shorter options on this list. A long staircase and uneven rocky sections mean families should allow at least three hours and assess their children’s abilities before visiting.

Al Rafisah Dam and Wadi Shees, Sharjah

Families seeking a quieter outing can explore Al Rafisah Dam, where a walkway surrounded by palm trees and mountain scenery offers opportunities for relaxed strolls and picnics.

Nearby, the Shees Nature Trail passes through a traditional mountain village, with sections of natural shade along the route.

Both locations are suitable for visitors who prefer shorter walks with opportunities to stop and enjoy the surroundings. However, families exploring Wadi Shees should bring their own water and snacks, as resting facilities are limited.

Mushrif Park, Dubai

Families who would rather avoid a long drive can find an accessible outdoor option at Mushrif Park.

Its hiking trail extends up to 10km, but the mostly flat, sandy terrain allows visitors to walk shorter sections and return whenever necessary. Designated resting areas provide opportunities for breaks, while the park also has a 1.4km running track and cycling routes.

Located approximately 30 minutes from Downtown Dubai, it is a convenient option for families planning a morning outdoors.

Preparing for a Family Hike

Even relatively short walks require preparation, particularly when children are involved. Families should carry sufficient drinking water, healthy snacks, sunscreen and a small first aid kit. Comfortable footwear with good grip and sun-protective clothing are also important.

Starting early can help visitors avoid stronger afternoon sunlight. Parents should choose routes according to their children’s ages and abilities, rather than focusing only on distance.

Staying on marked paths, checking weather conditions and avoiding wadis during or after heavy rainfall are essential precautions.

Most importantly, allow children to set the pace. A wildlife sighting, a picnic beside a dam or the excitement of reaching a mountain viewpoint can make a family outing memorable without having to complete every kilometre of a trail.
