The Karate Kid: Legends star could join Marvel’s mutant universe as Bobby Drake, bringing a fresh face to one of the franchise’s original superheroes.
Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men film is gaining momentum, with another familiar comic-book character potentially finding his new on-screen identity. Ben Wang, who attracted attention through his leading role in Karate Kid: Legends, is reportedly in talks to portray Bobby Drake, better known as Iceman, in the studio’s highly anticipated X-Men reboot.
The development, first reported by Deadline and subsequently covered by The Hollywood Reporter and TheWrap, marks another significant casting update for the project. Although an agreement has not yet been officially confirmed, Wang’s reported involvement has generated interest among fans eager to see Marvel introduce a new generation of mutants.
For Wang, the opportunity could represent another major step in a career that has increasingly placed him alongside established names and well-known entertainment franchises.
Who is Iceman in the X-Men universe?
Bobby Drake, or Iceman, is among the five original members of the X-Men, first appearing in Marvel Comics’ The X-Men #1 in 1963. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, the character has remained an important part of the franchise for more than six decades.
His mutant abilities allow him to generate and manipulate ice, lower temperatures and freeze objects or opponents. Over time, his powers have developed considerably, making him one of the most powerful characters within the wider mutant universe.
However, Iceman is not defined by his abilities alone. Bobby’s personality, humour and relationships with fellow mutants have helped establish him as a distinctive member of the team. His journey through the comics has also explored questions of identity, acceptance and belonging.
The character previously appeared in the X-Men film franchise through actor Shawn Ashmore, who portrayed him across several instalments, including X-Men, X2: X-Men United and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Wang’s reported casting would therefore introduce a different interpretation of a character that longtime audiences already recognise.
Several actors were considered for the role
Wang reportedly emerged as the preferred choice following a casting search that involved several other performers.
According to reporting by The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit, actors Gabriel LaBelle, known for The Fabelmans, Jackson Kelly, associated with The Pitt, and Rhenzy Feliz, known for The Penguin, were also considered for the part.
The casting decision is particularly significant because Iceman is one of the original five X-Men. With several founding characters already associated with performers in the upcoming film, Wang’s potential addition would bring Marvel closer to assembling the classic group.
Marvel’s new X-Men cast takes shape
Directed by Jake Schreier, whose previous Marvel project was Thunderbolts, the new X-Men film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on May 5, 2028.
The growing cast includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops and Asa Germann as Angel. Other reported cast members include Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister.
The combination of emerging performers and established actors suggests that Marvel is taking a fresh approach to its mutant universe.
Rather than simply repeating the earlier Fox-era films, the studio appears to be developing a new ensemble for audiences discovering these characters through the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Plot details remain undisclosed, leaving fans to speculate about the team’s relationships, the central conflict and how the mutants will fit into the wider superhero franchise.
From Karate Kid to a possible Marvel superhero
Wang’s growing filmography makes the reported opportunity particularly interesting. He gained wider recognition through Disney+’s American Born Chinese, before taking on the leading role of Li Fong in Karate Kid: Legends.
The martial arts film brought him together with franchise favourites Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, placing him at the centre of a well-established entertainment series.
He subsequently appeared in The Long Walk, the film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, directed by Francis Lawrence. His other screen credits include the 2024 version of Mean Girls.
Wang is also set to appear as Wyatt Callow in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, adding another major franchise to his expanding list of projects.
Moving from martial arts drama and dystopian storytelling into the superhero genre would offer him an entirely different kind of role, particularly one requiring physical performance and the portrayal of extraordinary abilities.
The Road Ahead for Marvel’s Mutants
Marvel has yet to officially announce Wang’s casting or reveal further details about the film’s storyline. The reported negotiations remain the key development, and audiences will have to wait for confirmation before considering the role final.
Nevertheless, the possibility of seeing Iceman return in a new X-Men generation has added another reason for fans to follow the project’s progress.
With its release planned for May 2028, Marvel’s mutant reboot is gradually becoming one of the studio’s most closely watched upcoming productions. If Wang’s deal is completed, Bobby Drake will have a new face, opening another chapter for one of the original X-Men.
