Arsenal and Chelsea meet at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, September 6, with both sides looking to turn perfect starts into an early statement of intent.

The London clubs have taken maximum points from their opening Premier League games, but in very different ways. Defending champions Arsenal have relied on control and defensive discipline, while Chelsea under Xabi Alonso have been far more adventurous scoring freely but leaving themselves exposed at the back.

It is only the third league game of the season, so this is hardly a title decider. Even so, the derby should reveal more about how both teams measure up against serious opposition.

Arsenal defence faces tougher examination

Mikel Arteta could hardly have asked for a better defensive start to Arsenal’s title defence.

The Gunners are yet to concede in the Premier League, following their opening victory over Coventry City with a hard fought 1-0 win at Aston Villa.

Chelsea should ask very different questions.

Alonso’s side have scored seven goals in two league matches and have enough pace and creativity to trouble an Arsenal defence dealing with several fitness concerns.

William Saliba remains unavailable with a back injury, while Jurrien Timber is unlikely to feature. Cristhian Mosquera and Bruno Guimaraes also missed training on Thursday. Declan Rice, however, has returned to the training pitch after causing concern during the Villa game.

With Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Morgan Rogers among Chelsea’s attacking options, Arsenal may need to reshuffle without losing the organisation behind their strong start.

Chelsea have goals, but also gaps

Chelsea’s opening two league matches have certainly delivered entertainment.

The Blues have scored seven and conceded five, with their latest outing ending in a dramatic 4-3 victory over Brighton.

Chelsea had just 26 per cent possession in that game but still found a way to win. It showed how dangerous they can be when space opens up, while also highlighting defensive weaknesses Arsenal will look to exploit.

Palmer could again be central to Chelsea’s hopes. He is one Premier League goal away from reaching 50 for the club and could hit the landmark in his 99th Chelsea appearance.

Doing it against Arsenal at the Emirates would make the occasion even more significant.

Midfield could decide the derby

Chelsea’s biggest selection concern may be in midfield.

Moises Caicedo returned from injury against Brighton but was forced off after experiencing pain, leaving his availability uncertain.

That matters even more following Enzo Fernandez’s £125 million deadline day move to Manchester City.

Chelsea attempted to strengthen before the transfer window closed but could not complete a deal for Lamine Camara. Romeo Lavia and Reece James could therefore be asked to operate deeper if Caicedo is unavailable.

Whatever combination Alonso chooses, Chelsea cannot afford to give Arsenal too much control in midfield. Sit too deep and pressure could build quickly; commit too many players forward and spaces could appear for the champions to exploit.

Finding the right balance could shape the outcome.

Chelsea looking to end Arsenal drought

Recent history strongly favours the hosts.

Chelsea have gone 11 matches without beating Arsenal in all competitions, while their last Premier League victory at the Emirates came in August 2021.

Sunday gives Alonso an opportunity to change that record.

Chelsea have made an encouraging start under their new manager, but winning away against the defending champions would carry considerably more weight than their opening results. It would offer early evidence that they can compete with the sides expected to challenge at the top.

Arsenal have their own point to make. Victory over another potential contender would maintain their perfect start and reinforce their position as the team everyone else is trying to catch.

Early test rather than title decider

Three matches cannot define a Premier League campaign, but fixtures like this can expose strengths and weaknesses that easier games sometimes hide.

Arsenal will want to control the tempo, stay compact and make home advantage count. Chelsea may prefer a more open contest, particularly if Palmer and his teammates can find space on the break.

A draw would be a respectable result for the visitors. Victory, however, would end their long wait for a win over Arsenal and add real substance to their promising start.

For Arteta’s champions, another three points would keep their momentum building as they begin the long task of defending their crown.

Arsenal vs Chelsea match details

Competition: Premier League
Date: Sunday, September 6, 2026
Kick-off: 7:30pm UAE time
Venue: Emirates Stadium, London

Arsenal’s defensive control against Chelsea’s attacking ambition gives this derby a fascinating edge. The title race will have a long way to go after Sunday, but the Emirates should offer an early glimpse of how serious both teams are this season.
