A trip to IKEA in the UAE usually means furniture, home accessories and, for many shoppers, a stop at the restaurant along the way. This September, though, there is something different on the menu.
For six days, Al-Futtaim IKEA is bringing Emirati flavours to its UAE restaurants, with a special menu featuring dishes such as Chicken Machboos, Thareed and Legeimat served with date syrup.
Available from September 1 to 6, the menu is part of the “UAE is Home” campaign. It arrives as summer holidays wind down, schools reopen and families begin settling back into their usual routines.
And food, as always, offers an easy reason to gather around the same table.
An Emirati start to the day
The local menu begins at breakfast.
Priced at Dh39 for two, the Emirati Breakfast brings together freshly baked Chebab, traditional Dango, Foul Medames, Hummus and other favourites in a spread designed for sharing.
For some diners, these are flavours they have known since childhood. For others, particularly residents who have spent years in the UAE without trying much Emirati cuisine, it offers an easy introduction.
That feels especially fitting in a country where people from different cultures share neighbourhoods, workplaces and everyday experiences.
Sometimes, getting to know a place can begin with breakfast.
Familiar favourites for lunch and dinner
Later in the day, some of the best-known dishes from Emirati and Gulf cooking take over.
Chicken Machboos and Chicken Thareed are priced at Dh25 each, while Vegetable Salona costs Dh15. Beef Salona and Foga Samak are Dh29, and Lamb Shank Mashwi is available for Dh49. Diners can also start with Lentil Soup for Dh9.
Machboos is perhaps the most instantly recognisable dish on the menu, combining seasoned rice with the warm, aromatic flavours associated with Gulf cooking.
Thareed brings a different kind of comfort. Bread absorbs the flavours of a rich stew, creating a hearty dish long associated with family meals.
Salona carries the same home-style appeal, while Foga Samak brings fish to the selection.
The concept is straightforward: familiar local dishes served in a place where shoppers might not normally expect to find them.
Legeimat for something sweet
Dessert brings another Emirati favourite to the table.
Freshly prepared Legeimat with date syrup are available for Dh9.
Golden and crisp on the outside while remaining soft inside, the small dough bites are a familiar sight at gatherings and celebrations across the UAE.
Their inclusion feels natural on a menu centred on sharing and home. After Machboos or Thareed, a plate of Legeimat offers a simple, recognisable way to finish the meal.
What does home taste like?
The “UAE is Home” theme takes on a wider meaning in a country where home can mean something different to almost everyone.
For Emiratis, a familiar dish may bring back memories of family meals. For long term residents, local flavours can become part of life in the country even if they were not part of their childhood.
For newcomers, trying Chebab, Thareed or Salona might be one small introduction to the culture of the place they now call home.
Food makes that connection easy. You do not need to know the history of every dish before enjoying it. Sometimes curiosity begins with the first bite.
A different IKEA food stop
Most shoppers probably do not walk into IKEA expecting to find an Emirati meal. That unexpected setting is part of the appeal.
The timing works too. September is a month of returning to routines in the UAE, from schools reopening to families coming home after summer travel.
Until September 6, a stop at IKEA can mean Chebab for breakfast, Machboos or Thareed later in the day and Legeimat to finish.
Some diners will recognise those flavours immediately. Others may be discovering them for the first time.
