Palestinian flags waved alongside UAE flags as thousands of people gathered at Dubai Exhibition Centre on August 29 for the inaugural “Emirates Loves Palestine” celebration at Expo City Dubai.

Traditional kufiyas could be seen throughout the venue as Palestinian music played, families gathered around food stalls and performers took to the stage. The event brought together Palestinian families, Emiratis and residents of different nationalities for a day centred on culture, heritage and community.

More than 50,000 people attended the celebration, which was held in the presence of Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence.

For many Palestinian residents, it was a chance to celebrate familiar traditions while introducing them to friends, colleagues and younger generations growing up in the UAE.

Palestinian culture takes centre stage

Traditional Palestinian dishes, handicrafts, folk arts, music, comedy and heritage displays gave people different ways to discover the culture. Live performances drew crowds, while food and crafts added to the atmosphere across the exhibition centre.

Many visitors arrived wearing the black and white kufiya, while Palestinian and UAE flags were visible throughout the venue.

For Palestinians living in the UAE, however, the day carried a meaning that went beyond entertainment.

Food, music and traditional clothing can hold strong memories for people living away from their homeland. Having all of those elements together offered families an opportunity to reconnect with their heritage in a setting they could share with the wider community.

Palestinian Ambassador to the UAE Abeer Al Ramahi highlighted the importance of recognising the Palestinian community and its cultural heritage.

She also expressed appreciation for the opportunity to showcase Palestinian traditions in the UAE, which is home to a sizeable Palestinian community.

Sharing traditions across communities

The celebration attracted more than just Palestinian visitors.

Emiratis and residents from different nationalities joined the gathering, giving many their first close look at some Palestinian traditions.

Food provided one introduction. Music and folk performances offered another. Conversations between visitors made the experience more personal.

Fuad Naser, one of those attending, told that the gathering gave Palestinians an opportunity to be surrounded by their community while allowing others to discover more about their culture.

Young people were also very much part of the day.

Students spoke about enjoying the performances, food and atmosphere, while parents brought children along to experience traditions that remain an important part of their family identity.

For families raising children away from their ancestral homeland, cultural events can provide a simple way of keeping those connections alive. A traditional song, familiar dish or dance can introduce younger generations to stories and customs they might otherwise know only through their parents and grandparents.

Music, food and memories of home

Much of the energy came from what was happening around the venue.

Artists performed live, traditional dances attracted crowds and visitors sampled Palestinian dishes while exploring crafts and cultural displays.

Rather than presenting heritage only through exhibitions, the celebration allowed people to experience it through sound, taste, clothing and conversation.

For some Palestinian residents, those familiar sights and flavours also brought back memories of home.

That sense of familiarity helped turn the event from a large cultural programme into something that felt more like a community gathering.

Palestinian businesses join the event

Culture wasn’t the only focus.

Palestinian entrepreneurs and business representatives also took part, adding an economic dimension to the celebration.

The Palestinian Business Council used the gathering to highlight Palestinian enterprise and encourage stronger connections between Palestinian and Emirati businesses.

Those efforts are expected to continue after the event.

A Palestinian Investment Forum is scheduled for October, while planned visits involving the Palestinian Stock Exchange and Palestinian universities are expected to create further opportunities for engagement and cooperation.

Celebrating communities that call the UAE home

“Emirates Loves Palestine” was organised by the “Emirates Loves Palestine” page in partnership with the UAE-Palestinian Friendship Club and the Palestinian Business Council in Dubai and the Northern Emirates.

The celebration forms part of the wider “Emirates Loves” initiative, which highlights the cultures and contributions of communities living across the UAE.

For many of those who attended, though, the meaning of the day was much simpler.

Families met friends, children watched traditional performances and visitors discovered Palestinian food and crafts. Others simply enjoyed hearing familiar music and being surrounded by people who shared the same traditions.

For Palestinians in the UAE, it was an opportunity to celebrate where they come from while sharing that heritage with the country they now call home.

And for everyone who joined them, the gathering offered a closer look at Palestinian culture through the people who continue to preserve it and pass it from one generation to the next.
