The United Arab Emirates has strongly condemned an attack targeting Qatar’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker Al Mayeda in the Arabian Gulf, warning that the incident poses serious risks to maritime navigation, international energy supplies and regional stability.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) described the targeting of the vessel as a dangerous escalation that could threaten the security of critical waterways. The ministry also highlighted the potential environmental consequences of incidents involving energy carriers and called for the protection of commercial vessels and their crews.
The UAE expressed solidarity with Qatar and stressed the importance of respecting international law and preventing disruptions to maritime traffic and global energy transportation.
Qatari LNG Carrier Al Mayeda Targeted in Arabian Gulf
The vessel involved in the incident, Al Mayeda, is owned by Qatar Gas Transport Company, also known as Nakilat, which plays a major role in transporting liquefied natural gas from Qatar to international markets.
According to Qatar Gas Transport Company, the LNG carrier was struck by unidentified objects while sailing in the Arabian Gulf on Friday evening, October 30.
The company confirmed that no crew members were injured and that the incident caused no environmental damage. It also stated that the vessel remained safe and operational, with an assessment under way to determine the impact.
Nakilat said it was maintaining direct coordination with the vessel, its crew and relevant maritime security authorities to ensure their safety and monitor the situation.
The company did not publicly identify the objects involved or disclose who was responsible for the incident.
UAE Warns of Risks to Global Energy Supplies
The UAE’s condemnation places renewed attention on the security of commercial shipping routes used to transport essential energy resources.
In its statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said attacks targeting energy carriers could have consequences extending beyond the immediate location of an incident. Disruptions to maritime navigation can affect international supply chains, while damage to vessels carrying energy products may create environmental risks.
The ministry called for commercial ships, energy tankers and their crews to be protected, emphasising that international law must be upheld.
The Arabian Gulf is an important maritime region for energy exports, with vessels regularly transporting oil, natural gas and other commercial goods to destinations across the world. Maintaining safe passage through its waterways is therefore significant for regional economies and international trade.
Why LNG Tanker Security Matters
Liquefied natural gas is natural gas cooled to a liquid state, allowing it to be transported in specialised carriers over long distances. It is an important source of energy for countries that rely on imports to support electricity generation, industrial operations and other essential activities.
Qatar is among the world’s major LNG suppliers, making the safety of its export operations particularly important to international energy markets.
LNG carriers are specially designed to transport large quantities of the fuel under controlled conditions. Any incident involving these vessels can raise concerns about crew safety, maritime operations and potential environmental consequences.
Although Nakilat reported no injuries or environmental damage in the Al Mayeda incident, the targeting has drawn attention to the risks faced by commercial energy vessels operating in the region.
UAE Reaffirms Support for Qatar
The UAE’s statement also underlined the importance of regional cooperation in responding to threats against maritime transportation.
By expressing solidarity with Qatar, Abu Dhabi reiterated its position on protecting commercial shipping and maintaining stability across vital waterways.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that actions threatening maritime navigation or the movement of energy supplies should be prevented. It also called for adherence to international law and the protection of vessels and their crews.
The incident comes at a time when the security of commercial shipping in the Gulf remains an important regional concern. For energy exporting countries, safe maritime routes are essential to maintaining reliable deliveries and protecting economic interests.
Maritime Navigation Remains a Key Regional Concern
The targeting of Al Mayeda highlights the importance of safeguarding vessels that carry essential energy supplies through the Arabian Gulf.
While the tanker remained operational and its crew escaped injury, the incident has prompted renewed calls for stronger protection of commercial shipping and greater attention to maritime security.
The UAE’s condemnation reinforces the need to prevent further threats to critical waterways and ensure that international vessels can operate safely.
As assessments of the incident continue, the security of energy transportation routes remains a priority for countries across the region and the wider global energy industry.
