The Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship will celebrate a significant milestone in golf development when it returns to Yas Links from November 5 to 8, with initiatives connected to the tournament and the Team Cup set to have introduced more than 10,000 children and young people in the UAE to the sport.
The achievement highlights the growing importance of community engagement alongside elite competition, as Abu Dhabi continues to strengthen its position on the international golfing calendar. The championship will bring leading professionals to the capital while drawing attention to efforts to make golf more accessible to younger generations.
Organised by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and the DP World Tour, the tournament is the first of two events in the season-ending DP World Tour Play-Offs. Its return will combine high-level competition with a broader focus on participation, youth development and the long-term growth of the game.
Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm Headline the Field
The upcoming championship is expected to attract considerable attention, with six-time major champion Rory McIlroy returning to Abu Dhabi and two-time major winner Jon Rahm preparing to make his debut at Yas Links.
McIlroy has finished runner-up at the Abu Dhabi tournament four times and will be seeking his first victory at the venue. The Northern Irishman is also pursuing a record-equalling eighth Race to Dubai title, adding another layer of significance to his appearance during the closing stages of the season.
Rahm brings an impressive record in Rolex Series events, having secured five titles on the DP World Tour’s premier stage. His debut in Abu Dhabi adds further depth to a field featuring established international contenders.
Defending champion Aaron Rai will also return, having won the 2025 edition before going on to claim the US PGA Championship in 2026. The presence of major champions and established tour winners is expected to make the competition particularly compelling.
Yas Links Prepares for a Major Sporting Occasion
Yas Links will once again provide the setting for the championship, bringing international professional golf to one of Abu Dhabi’s established sporting destinations.
The course’s coastal landscape and links-style design offer a distinctive challenge, requiring players to combine accuracy, tactical judgement and consistency throughout the tournament. Its setting also reinforces Yas Island’s broader appeal as a destination for sport, entertainment and leisure.
The championship forms an important part of the UAE’s annual sporting calendar, attracting international attention while supporting the country’s ambitions to host prominent global competitions.
For spectators, the event offers an opportunity to watch some of the game’s leading professionals compete in person. General admission will be free for the first two days, while tickets for the final two days start at AED 75, widening access to the tournament.
Youth Participation Remains Meaningful
The milestone involving 10,000 young people reflects a wider effort to introduce golf to new audiences and encourage participation beyond established clubs and professional settings.
Community initiatives associated with the Abu Dhabi Championship and the Team Cup have helped provide children and young people with opportunities to discover the sport. Early exposure can help develop an understanding of golf’s fundamentals while encouraging qualities such as patience, discipline, concentration and respect.
Expanding access to the game is also important for building a stronger future talent pool. Young participants who develop an interest through introductory programmes may progress towards coaching, club participation and junior competitions.
While professional tournaments attract attention through elite performances and major titles, community programmes can create a lasting impact by helping more people see golf as an accessible sporting pursuit.
The latest milestone places this work alongside the championship’s international profile, demonstrating how a major sporting event can support objectives extending beyond the competition itself.
Dubai to Host the Season Finale
Following the Abu Dhabi Championship, the DP World Tour Play Offs will move to Dubai for the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates from November 12 to 15.
The season-ending tournament will determine the Race to Dubai champion, bringing the campaign to a conclusion after a closely contested series of events. McIlroy’s pursuit of an eighth title adds further interest, particularly as he seeks to match Colin Montgomerie’s record.
Together, the Abu Dhabi and Dubai tournaments reinforce the UAE’s place in the final stages of the international golf season.
The Abu Dhabi Championship’s combination of world-class competition and community engagement offers a broader measure of its significance. As leading players prepare to compete at Yas Links, the milestone of introducing more than 10,000 young people to golf highlights an equally important ambition: ensuring the sport continues to attract and inspire the next generation.
