Three Captain Americas, a returning Steve Rogers and a villain who could change the fate of the Marvel universe Avengers: Doomsday is giving fans plenty to talk about.
Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster brings together familiar superheroes for a confrontation with Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. The latest promotional footage mixes an unexpected moment of humour involving Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson and John Walker with a more serious warning about the danger ahead.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit US cinemas on December 18, 2026. With characters from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) preparing to unite, the biggest question is whether even this expanded superhero lineup can stop Doom.
Three Captain Americas Create Confusion
One of the most amusing moments involves Scott Lang, also known as Ant-Man, and three characters connected to the Captain America identity.
Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers, the original Captain America, while Anthony Mackie reprises his role as Sam Wilson. Sam took up the shield after Rogers passed it to him at the end of Avengers: Endgame.
Wyatt Russell also returns as John Walker, who briefly served as the government-appointed Captain America before becoming associated with the US Agent identity.
The presence of all three creates an awkward situation for Scott, who must work out which Captain America he is addressing. Walker’s reminder that he once held the title adds another layer to the exchange.
The joke highlights how the superhero identity has evolved over the years. Rather than belonging to one person, Captain America has become a legacy carried by different characters, each with a distinct history.
For viewers familiar with the MCU, the scene offers a lighthearted moment while acknowledging the complicated relationships surrounding the famous shield.
Thor Warns of the Danger Ahead
The footage takes a more serious turn as Thor prepares the heroes for the threat posed by Doctor Doom.
Played by Chris Hemsworth, the God of Thunder appears determined to bring the different groups together. His warning suggests that Doom’s plans could have consequences far beyond a conventional superhero confrontation.
The footage also draws attention to Thor’s connection with Steve Rogers. Their shared history includes one of the standout scenes in Avengers: Endgame, when Rogers proved himself worthy of lifting Mjolnir, Thor’s enchanted hammer.
Their reunion brings an emotional element to the film’s larger conflict. As heroes from different backgrounds prepare to work together, their existing friendships could prove just as important as their individual abilities.
Robert Downey Jr. Takes on a New Marvel Role
Downey’s return to Marvel is particularly significant because of his previous role as Tony Stark, the genius inventor who became Iron Man.
Stark’s sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame marked the end of a major chapter in the MCU. Now, Downey is taking on Victor von Doom, a formidable Marvel antagonist whose appearance has generated considerable interest among fans.
The casting has prompted speculation about whether Doom could have a connection to an alternate version of Stark. However, that possibility remains unconfirmed, and Marvel has yet to reveal the full extent of the villain’s backstory.
His motivations and plans remain central mysteries surrounding the film. The promotional footage offers glimpses of the coming conflict without revealing how the heroes will attempt to defeat him.
X-Men and Fantastic Four Join the Crossover
Avengers: Doomsday will bring together characters from several Marvel franchises, expanding the range of heroes involved in the fight.
The announced cast includes members of the Fantastic Four and returning performers from the earlier X-Men films, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and James Marsden. They join established MCU actors in a crossover that connects previously separate superhero stories.
Bringing so many characters together presents a storytelling challenge. The film will need to balance individual personalities and histories while establishing why these different groups must unite against a common enemy.
Their involvement also opens the door to new character interactions, particularly between heroes who have never shared the screen within the MCU before.
When Does Avengers: Doomsday Release?
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for theatrical release on December 18, 2026. The Russo brothers are directing the project, which features a large ensemble of returning actors and characters.
Although the promotional footage has offered a glimpse of the film’s tone and cast, major plot details remain undisclosed. Questions surrounding Doctor Doom’s ultimate objective and the heroes chances of stopping him are likely to remain topics of discussion until Marvel reveals more.
The latest footage balances humour with the threat of a potentially devastating conflict. With Steve Rogers returning, Thor rallying the heroes and Downey stepping into a new role, Avengers: Doomsday is preparing to bring several corners of the Marvel universe into one high-stakes story.
