Abu Dhabi's new approach to preventive healthcare
SHARE

Abu Dhabi is taking a broader approach to family healthcare, with greater emphasis on preventing illness, identifying health risks early and ensuring that patients can access the right care when they need it.

The emirate is bringing preventive services, primary care, advanced medicine and digital health closer together as part of a healthcare model designed to support families through different stages of life.

The approach is gaining added significance during the UAE’s Year of the Family 2026, with the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi placing family wellbeing at the centre of its wider healthcare priorities.

The strategy rests on four areas: prevention and proactive healthcare, high-quality clinical care, innovation, and preparedness and response.

Prevention starts early

For Abu Dhabi, family health begins well before a serious illness requires hospital treatment.

The emirate’s IFHAS periodic screening programme provides assessments from age 18, helping people understand their health earlier and identify potential concerns before they become more difficult to manage.

The programme has been expanded to include additional family-health assessments, reinforcing the emirate’s focus on early action and informed healthcare decisions.

This preventive approach continues into early childhood. Abu Dhabi’s newborn screening programme covers more than 815 treatable conditions, including conditions that may not show clear signs immediately after birth.

Early identification gives doctors more time to respond and can allow treatment to begin before a condition has a greater effect on a child’s health.

The emirate has also introduced an integrated postnatal care programme combining home visits, teleconsultations and outpatient services. It provides mothers with medical and psychological support after childbirth while keeping families connected to professional care.

Keeping family doctors at the centre

Advanced technology and specialist medicine are changing healthcare, but the family doctor remains a key part of Abu Dhabi’s approach.

The emirate’s primary healthcare network includes 818 family physicians across 237 facilities. Services range from vaccinations and routine screening to health education, psychological support and chronic disease management.

For families, having access to primary care close to home can make prevention part of everyday healthcare rather than something considered only after symptoms appear.

Regular consultations also give doctors an opportunity to follow changes in a patient’s health over time, monitor existing conditions and provide advice before smaller concerns develop into more serious problems.

Making healthcare more connected

Digital technology is playing a growing role in how Abu Dhabi delivers care.

The Malaffi health information exchange allows physicians to access patient information across the emirate’s healthcare network, helping them make decisions with a more complete picture of a patient’s medical history.

The platform also provides advanced reports and AI-powered risk assessment profiles designed to help identify potential chronic disease risks.

For families, the Sehhatna application brings several services together, including appointment booking, teleconsultations and access to medical records. Family members’ health profiles can also be linked, making it easier to manage healthcare needs within one household.

The application has been integrated into the TAMM platform, further connecting healthcare services with the digital services residents already use.

Specialist care when it is needed

A stronger emphasis on prevention does not come at the expense of advanced medical treatment.

Abu Dhabi has more than 3,800 healthcare facilities, supported by Centres of Excellence in areas including adult and paediatric cardiac surgery, bone marrow transplantation, multi-organ transplantation, burns care and stroke treatment.

A specialised city dedicated to women’s and children’s health is also under development.

The emirate’s Visiting Doctors Programme brings international medical expertise to Abu Dhabi, allowing patients to access advanced treatment locally while supporting knowledge transfer and the development of local healthcare capabilities.

This means the healthcare system is being developed to address both sides of the equation — reducing health risks where possible while providing highly specialised treatment when complex medical needs arise.

Health does not stop at the hospital

Abu Dhabi’s family-health strategy also extends into everyday life.

The emirate’s Health Festival promotes four areas that can have a direct impact on long-term wellbeing: physical activity, nutrition, sleep and mental wellbeing.

More than 47,000 people attended the festival’s inaugural edition, which forms part of Abu Dhabi’s Healthy Living Strategy. The wider aim is to make healthier choices easier and encourage families to turn health awareness into lasting habits.

That focus matters because many factors affecting long-term health are shaped outside medical facilities through daily routines, diet, physical activity, sleep and mental wellbeing.

Prepared for emergencies

The healthcare system is also being strengthened to respond when families face unexpected medical emergencies.

Abu Dhabi operates round-the-clock emergency services alongside a Unified Medical Operations Centre, which coordinates healthcare responses and resources among different providers.

The system is designed to support rapid intervention and continuity of care during emergencies, adding another layer of resilience to the emirate’s healthcare network.

A longer view of family health

Abu Dhabi’s healthcare strategy reflects a wider change in how health is approached — moving from treating illness alone towards protecting health over the long term.

Screening and early detection are being combined with family medicine, digital services, healthy-living initiatives and specialised treatment. The aim is to identify potential problems sooner, make healthcare easier to access and ensure that patients can move between different levels of care when necessary.

For families, that means healthcare is becoming less about a single visit or episode of treatment and more about continuous support throughout life.

As the UAE marks the Year of the Family, Abu Dhabi is putting prevention, accessible care, innovation and preparedness at the centre of its health agenda.

The goal is straightforward: help families stay healthier for longer while ensuring that high-quality care is available when it matters most.
