The UAE marks Union Pledge Day on 18 July, commemorating the signing of the Declaration of the Union and the UAE Constitution by the Founding Fathers in 1971. The occasion honours the vision that united the Emirates and set the nation on a remarkable path of growth, stability and international influence over the past 55 years.

Observed annually, Union Pledge Day serves as a reminder of the historic agreement that laid the constitutional foundation of the United Arab Emirates. While Eid Al Etihad on 2 December celebrates the official establishment of the federation, Union Pledge Day recognises the earlier milestone that made the country’s unification possible.

Honouring the Vision of the Founding Fathers

The national occasion was introduced in 2024 after President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan designated 18 July as Union Pledge Day. The date commemorates the landmark meeting during which the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of the Union, approved the Constitution and agreed on the name United Arab Emirates.

This year’s observance marks the second official commemoration of the occasion, offering citizens and residents an opportunity to reflect on the leadership, determination and shared purpose that shaped the nation’s future.

Union Pledge Day also pays tribute to the enduring legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, whose vision of unity continues to influence the country’s development. The day reinforces the values of loyalty, belonging and national cohesion while encouraging future generations to preserve the principles on which the federation was built.

A Renewed Commitment to Unity

Marking the first Union Pledge Day last year, Sheikh Mohamed described the occasion as a celebration of the Founding Fathers’ vision and a renewed commitment to safeguarding the Union’s achievements. He emphasised that unity remains the cornerstone of the UAE’s continued progress and prosperity.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, also reflected on the significance of the historic gathering, describing it as the moment when the aspirations of the Emirates came together to create one of the Arab world’s most successful models of unity and cooperation.

Officials say the annual observance strengthens national identity while helping younger generations understand the events that transformed separate emirates into a modern federation recognised for innovation, stability and opportunity.

Five Decades of Growth and Global Recognition

The 55th anniversary arrives as the UAE continues to strengthen its position on the global stage.

According to the 2026 World Competitiveness Report, the UAE ranked fifth worldwide and retained its position as the region’s leading economy for the tenth consecutive year. The country also ranked first globally in economic performance, topped 21 international indicators and secured places among the world’s top five in 67 competitiveness measures.

Economic momentum has also remained strong. The UAE’s non-oil foreign trade exceeded AED 3.8 trillion in 2025, representing growth of nearly 27 per cent compared with the previous year. Non-oil exports climbed above AED 813 billion, reflecting an annual increase of 45.5 per cent and highlighting the country’s continuing economic diversification.

Alongside economic development, the UAE has expanded its humanitarian initiatives, reinforcing international cooperation and humanitarian assistance as central pillars of its national vision. Officials continue to describe humanitarian work as an enduring part of the values established by the Founding Fathers.

Shaping the Future

Following the leadership of Sheikh Zayed, the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan oversaw a period of institutional growth, strengthening education, governance and public participation between 2004 and 2022.

Today, under the leadership of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE continues to build on that legacy by investing in innovation, sustainable development and future-ready industries. As the nation marks Union Pledge Day on 18 July, the occasion stands not only as a tribute to its history but also as a reaffirmation of the unity, ambition and shared vision that continue to shape the country’s future.
